McDonald's - Largest restaurant in Western Europe at the Millennium Dome
"As our flagship restaurant for the Millennium, this project was a perfect match for the Dome experience."
The Requirement
The challenge was to provide a building of the highest quality, in an exceptionally tight timescale and within the constraints of the country's busiest building site.
The 500-seater restaurant would be McDonalds' largest restaurant in Western Europe, positioned directly in front of the Millennium Dome. Equivalent in size to eight McDonald's drive-thru restaurants, this scheme would incorporate state-of-the-art technology, including a video wall, digital menu boards, express service lanes and remote drinks stations.
The Solution
This project was Yorkon's 150th restaurant for McDonalds, and was by far the most demanding. 51 steel-framed modules were manufactured by Yorkon and delivered to the Dome site, with catering equipment, signage, glazing, heating, plumbing, ventilation, ceramic finishes, joinery and internal walls pre-installed in York.
The scheme, which was McDonald's 1000th restaurant in the UK, was designed to maximise the use of recyclable and environmentally sound materials. The 2,200 sqm restaurant building also accommodated 10 retail units for other sponsors of the Millennium Experience.
Comments from the Client
Barrie Flack, Director of Design for McDonald's Restaurants Ltd:
"The Dome restaurant offered McDonald's an opportunity unrivalled by any we have faced in 25 years of business in the UK. Visitors to the Dome enjoyed the same high standard menu, quick service and value for money that they expect from McDonald's, coupled with innovation on all fronts, particularly in design and technology. As our flagship restaurant for the Millennium, it was a perfect match for the Dome experience."
