17/10/2001 – Yorkon builds its first convenience stores for Tesco Express off-site in York

Modular building specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has completed construction of its first convenience stores for Tesco Express. The stores at South Oxhey in Hertfordshire, Olton in the West Midlands and Chadwell St Mary's in Essex were built off-site in York to reduce construction time and guarantee quality and cost control. They bring the total number of Express stores now open in the UK to 60.

Yorkon has formed a partnership with the UK's biggest supermarket retailer to build around 49 Express stores nationwide over the next 12 months. The orders are worth in the region of £10m. The development programme is part of a two-year plan announced by Tesco to create up to 150 new stores on Esso petrol forecourts.

Each convenience store was delivered to site by road as 7 or 8 12m long steel-framed modules, which were craned onto pre-prepared foundations in just one day. Checkouts, cigarette gantries, freezers, chillers, toilets, doors, glazing and tiled floors were all preinstalled in York to ensure faster completion on site and significantly improved quality.

Following completion of an extensive product development process, Yorkon has introduced a specially designed building module for Tesco Express. It is being used to create standardised convenience stores providing 2000sqft or 2500sqft of retail space.

Tesco Express stores sell around 2,500 product lines, including fresh fruit and vegetables, ready meals, sandwiches and snacks and bread baked on the premises, giving customers choice, value, quality and local convenience.
