16/07/2004 – Yorkon awarded new contracts worth £3m

Portakabin subsidiary Yorkon has been awarded new building contracts worth in excess of £3m in the past month.

The York-based off-site construction specialists are to provide a £1.4m three-storey control centre for the Runcorn site of INEOS Chlor – one of Europe's major producers of chlor alkali and a global leader in chlorine derivatives.

The new building will be manufactured off-site at Yorkon's production centre in York and craned into position in October this year as 42 steel-framed modules, ready for fitting out. Yorkon's contract is part of an ongoing investment programme for the Runcorn operation.

At Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Yorkon is to design, build and fit out a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory to accommodate a state-of-the-art medical scanner, and associated treatment rooms and wards for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. Scheduled for completion late summer 2004, this single-storey building will be located in a currently under-utilised courtyard and linked to the main hospital. The contract value is £1.2m.

South Birmingham Mental Health Trust has appointed Yorkon to extend an existing Yorkon building. The £500,000 project at Holyhill Nursing Home in Rubery will be handed over in autumn this year. The single-storey extension will feature brick cladding and a pitched roof to complement the existing facility.

Each of the new projects will be among the first Yorkon buildings to benefit from the Portakabin Group's pioneering warranty package that has recently been launched. A modular industry first, the 20-year structural warranty and 5-year product warranty are part of a new and unique Customer Charter introduced to set out the Group's commitment to delivering every project to the highest quality standards.

Yorkon has been manufacturing award-winning modular buildings since 1980. This highly innovative method of construction is an efficient alternative to traditional site-based construction, which saves time, guarantees quality and minimises disruption.
