18/04/2006 – Yorkon Launches New DVD for Healthcare Professionals
Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon – winner of the Off-site Manufacturing Specialist of the Year award for the past three years – has launched a new DVD to illustrate how off-site construction can be used in the healthcare sector.
The DVD is designed to assist professionals in health authorities, NHS trusts and independent healthcare providers, as well as architects and contractors, who are considering modular construction for new hospital buildings, treatment centres and extensions.
The DVD features footage of the construction process, a number of finished hospital buildings and an interview with a nurse matron. It looks at two NHS treatment centres – the £12m Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre, which was the first ITC to be built off-site and the most complex modular building project ever undertaken in the UK – and Yorkon's second ITC, the St Mary's NHS Treatment Centre in Portsmouth.
The three-storey healthcare facility for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is also included. Completed just nine months after start on site, this 4,950sqm ward and theatre building has enabled up to 10,000 additional inpatients to be cared for each year.
Modular construction offers a number of clear advantages over site-based building methods – speed of response, cost control, less disruption, improved safety, earlier occupation and better quality. The Yorkon approach is up to 50 per cent faster, allows greater design flexibility, offers enhanced thermal efficiency and minimises risk for the client. More than 96 per cent of Yorkon projects have been completed on time and on budget over the past five years – well exceeding construction industry averages and giving greater peace of mind.
Yorkon has an extensive track record in the healthcare sector, having completed a wide range of facilities on some of the most challenging and constrained hospital sites, including NHS treatment centres, ward accommodation, endoscopy suites, an emergency medicine centre, theatre blocks, a specialist cardiac unit and a paediatrics department.
Its award-winning modular building system allows the creation of large internal spans and a high degree of architectural variety for the external envelope.
Copies of the new DVD can be requested on-line or by calling 0845 2000 123.
Editor's Notes
- As part of its commitment to quality and service, Yorkon has launched a customer charter, which sets out a series of performance standards for every building project. This includes a pioneering warranty package – a modular industry first. Every Yorkon building now has the benefit of a 20-year structural warranty and a 5-year product warranty, in addition to the system's BBA and LPCB certification and LANTAC approval.
- In addition to its design and build services, Yorkon also offers a finance package, which is based on an operating lease arrangement. This gives healthcare providers a high degree of flexibility and minimises risk.
- Off-site construction involves the manufacture of steel-framed modules in a factory environment, using production line technology, whilst the foundation works are completed on site. The modules are delivered to site by road where they are craned into position in just a few days ready for fitting out.
