13/06/2006 – Yorkon Completes Fourth Scheme at Whipps Cross University Hospital
Yorkon has completed its fourth contract at Whipps Cross University Hospital in East London. This latest project brings the total value of work completed by Yorkon at the hospital to more than £5m.
Built in just 26 weeks, Yorkon has designed and built a new ophthalmology department, allowing the Trust to offer an enhanced environment for patients and staff, and to extend its eye services from testing through to day surgery procedures.
The scheme has a roof top plant area and provides 21 treatment rooms for pre-assessment, visual testing, laser treatment, orthoptics and examination. There are separate waiting areas for the Eye Treatment Centre and theatres.
Yorkon has also constructed a two-storey building for endoscopy and cancer services in an enclosed courtyard. Designed to accommodate an increase in patient numbers and to replace an existing smaller endoscopy facility, the scheme was built on a steel frame, which became the basement plant area.
Previous facilities built by Yorkon included a new Emergency Medical Centre, which extended the A&E department and enabled the Trust to achieve Emergency Standards of 98 per cent.
Commenting on the latest projects, Reg Hollis, Head of Building and Engineering Services at the hospital, said, "We have been delighted with Yorkon's reliability and performance on each project – every contract has been delivered on time and on budget."
He added, "The commissioning period for Yorkon buildings is simplified and their approach is much less disruptive. The Yorkon system is sufficiently flexible to meet our design requirements for highly efficient spaces and their team works as a genuine extension to our estates department, helping us to achieve the standards and quality of finish we expect, and without difficulty."
David Johnson, Director and General Manager of Yorkon, said, "The construction of a two-storey building in a completely enclosed courtyard was by far the most challenging project we have undertaken at Whipps Cross. The Trust was treating patients less than 3 metres away from the new building and yet there was no disruption to any of the departments surrounding the courtyard."
"The high level of repeat business we receive from customers in every sector, which stands at more than two thirds, is a significant endorsement of our approach and our multi award-winning building system. We look forward to continuing our highly successful relationship with Whipps Cross, and to helping other healthcare providers improve patient services."
