06/11/2006 – Yorkon to Present New Shaped Modules and Design Options at Futurebuild

Modular building specialists, Yorkon, will be showcasing their off-site construction services at Futurebuild 2007 and launching a range of new design options.

The new facetted modules from YorkonThe new innovations in off-site construction include a design for facetted modules, which can be used to create sweeping curved façades, shaped atria and feature entrances.  This alternative to conventional rectangular modules also allows more efficient development of curved and irregular sites, and greater design flexibility for architects and specifiers.

The new shaped module is based on the same structural frame as the standard Yorkon system and so has the reassurance of warranties, independent certifications and approvals.

An expanded suite of design options for the external envelope will also be launched.  Yorkon has introduced a wider range of glazing configurations and claddings, such as cedar boarding, composite metal panels, terracotta tiles, render and brickwork, enabling architects and contractors to achieve further architectural variety with all the speed and quality benefits of off-site construction.

A prototype building displaying the facetted modules has been manufactured at the company’s production centre in York, giving architects, contractors and clients the opportunity to see the effect created by the new facetted system and the wider range of dry claddings and window types.

These developments are part of Yorkon’s commitment to pushing forward the boundaries of modern construction methods, and combining innovative and inspirational architectural design with all the advantages of modular building.

Yorkon, a subsidiary of Portakabin, is the winner of the Off-site Manufacturing Specialist of the Year award for the third consecutive year – a significant endorsement of its modular building system and approach. Recent schemes include two independent treatment centres, an adult education centre in Lewisham and a new office building for the Highways Agency – all completed on time and on budget.

Time and cost overruns are still a major concern for both public and private sector construction clients.  Over the past five years, Yorkon has delivered 96 per cent of building projects on time and 94 per cent on budget, well exceeding construction industry averages.

The Yorkon approach can help deliver higher quality accommodation solutions to tight timescales, with greatly reduced disruption, and much less risk for the client.  Other advantages include safer sites, cost predictability and enhanced thermal efficiency.

Yorkon will be exhibiting at Futurebuild on stand F458

Editor’s Notes

  • The award-winning modular building system from Yorkon is an efficient alternative to traditional site-based construction, which saves time, guarantees quality and minimises disruption to existing operations and the local community.
  • Off-site construction involves the manufacture of steel-framed modules in a factory environment, using production line technology, whilst the foundation works are completed on site. The modules are delivered to site by road where they are craned into position in just a few days ready for fitting out.
