15/10/2007 – New Modular Classroom Building is Handed Over Just 3 Months After Start of Work on Site
Award-winning off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has handed over a new purpose-designed classroom building to Hayes School in Bromley just three months after start of work on site.
Manufactured in York, the two-storey teaching block for the foundation school's English department comprises 22 12m long steel modules. The units were craned into position during school holidays to reduce any disruption to staff and pupils.
Situated in an attractive parkland setting, the scheme, which was completed on programme and within budget, has allowed the school to expand its accommodation with eight new classrooms in time for the start of the new academic year. Features include large picture windows and a variety of claddings - timber, render and blue powder coated panel detailing - to add interest to the building envelope.
Commenting on the new building, Kieran Osborne, Head Teacher at Hayes School, said, "The new facilities are first class. The project team did a great job of meeting our requirements and the challenging timescale. Everyone - from governors and staff to our students - are very positive and enthusiastic about the new building."
"The quality of finish, both internally and externally, is excellent. Yorkon performed very well, were highly professional throughout and kept us fully informed at every stage. The off-site method was cost-effective, convenient and fast and we are delighted with the end result, which means we no longer have to split departments over different parts of the school."
The project managers for the scheme were John Pelling & Partners, and the concept architects were PCKO Architects.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Hayes School, is a secondary school with over 1,500 pupils and specialising in media and the arts.
The Yorkon off-site building system has been widely used in the primary, secondary and higher education sectors to provide complete new schools and extensions, self-contained teaching blocks, adult education centres and nurseries. Benefits of this innovative and multi award-winning approach to construction include:
- Significantly less disruption to teaching
- Enhanced thermal efficiency, lower running costs and reduced carbon emissions
- Guaranteed completion on time and on budget
- Improved quality
- Programme times reduced by up to 50 per cent
- Improved safety on site
- Greater design flexibility and architectural variety than ever before.
