26/11/2007 – Yorkon Launches New Design Initiatives at Futurebuild 08

Futurebuild 08 - Stand F136

Award-winning off-site specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, is to unveil its latest design initiatives for modular building at Futurebuild 2008.

TP Bennett imageYorkon will be launching a pioneering new design concept to demonstrate the architectural flexibility of its steel-framed modular building system. Developed in partnership with architects tp bennett, the exemplar designs have a wide range of practical applications, including retail, leisure and commercial schemes.

The research and development project incorporates the latest innovations in modular construction introduced by Yorkon - shaped modules and 12m clear internal spans for buildings up to six storeys high - to produce a series of inspiring designs that celebrate modern methods of construction.

The concepts suggest a six-storey linear building sitting alongside a curved building around a central plaza, and featuring elements such as external terraces, glazed atria and vertical light shafts.

design guideYorkon will also be presenting its new design tool at Futurebuild, which helps architects work with off-site construction.

Available in interactive pdf and 3D Autocad formats, the tool contains a comprehensive guide to steel-framed modular construction to assist architects in developing a building design for a specific site. It features both dimensional and construction detailing to facilitate the production of fast and accurate project drawings.

The guide has been developed by Yorkon in response to the increasing interest from architects and contractors in modular building. It will help specifiers gain a better understanding of the system and the process in order to maximise the benefits of off-site construction, and to design for modular rather than site-based construction from the outset.

Commenting on these latest initiatives, David Johnson, Director and General Manager of Yorkon, said, "We want to continue to push the boundaries of off-site construction as part of our ongoing commitment to design and innovation. We have developed a series of exciting and practical concepts, which we hope will inspire architects, contractors and clients alike."

"We also recognise that we have a key role to play in helping designers and other construction professionals work with off-site building methods, encouraging them to think Production rather than Construction."

The Yorkon approach to off-site construction is highly sustainable, will deliver higher quality facilities on time and on budget and with less disruption. It can reduce programme times by up to 50 per cent, is safer, more predictable and offers enhanced thermal efficiency.

Yorkon will be exhibiting at Futurebuild on stand F136.
