Yorkon Completes First 10,000sqft Modular Supermarket for Tesco
Off-site construction specialist and Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has developed a new 10,000sqft modular store for Tesco - its largest supermarket for the food retailer.
The new modular supermarket, which is almost three times the size of the convenience stores manufactured by Yorkon for Tesco previously, has been engineered to increase the level of off-site fitting out and to minimise the number of internal columns to create maximum clear spans.
The supermarket is constructed from 26 14m-long steel-framed modules which are manufactured and substantially fitted out off site in York. Ceramic floor tiles, roller shutters, freezers and chillers, shelving, internal walls, plumbing, electrics, mechanical ventilation, sanitary ware, doors and shop front glazing are all pre-installed at the Yorkon production centre.
The building is then installed on site in just three days, and is open to customers less than three weeks later, significantly reducing the completion time for new stores.
Facilities include an in-store bakery, frozen food and chiller sections, office, store room, staff facilities, plant room, cleaner's area and bulk storage.
The first application of the new 10,000sqft modular supermarket is in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, where the building has provided a temporary store for seven weeks to reduce disruption to customers during the redevelopment of the existing superstore. It will then be moved to its permanent location in Aberdeen.
Commenting on the Barnsley project, Daniel Frith, Tesco Development Manager, said, "The principle of off-site construction and off-site fitting out works very well for Tesco, particularly on constrained sites."

The Barnsley store was delivered in just 11 weeks from receipt of order to trading - a time saving of around four weeks compared to former temporary stores.
