Yorkon Hands Over UK's Largest Complete Hospital to be Built Off Site
Award-winning off-site construction specialist and
Portakabin subsidiary, Yorkon, has handed over a new treatment centre in
The project for independent healthcare providers
Designed by architects TP Bennett, the Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre, is a new purpose-built surgical hospital which is providing a range of elective surgical services, including inpatient treatment to NHS patients.
The three-storey 4,842sqm building comprises 114 steel modules up to 14m long, which Yorkon craned into position in just three weeks to reduce disruption, and the build time to only eight months.
The treatment
centre is designed to be highly sustainable and features services monitoring,
water conservation devices and solar shading, and a sustainable green roof to
the adjacent service building.
Externally it is clad in horizontal cedar with areas of terracotta,
render and aluminium rainscreen cladding to contrast with the white steel
modules and the glazed atrium.
The scheme is also the first application in the healthcare sector of the new Yorkon high performance pre-installed concrete floor, which was used in the operating theatres to accommodate highly sensitive medical equipment.
Commenting on the project, Fiona Calnan, Chief Executive of UKSH, said, “Yorkon was our preferred contractor for our new treatment centre, following their successful delivery of our Shepton Mallet hospital. The facility at Emersons Green is a complex building and we wanted the security and reassurance of working with a healthcare construction specialist that had already delivered.”
“The site was well managed at every stage and the treatment centre is finished to a high standard throughout. We are pleased with the end result and look forward to welcoming patients at the new facility for many years to come.”
Yorkon was also awarded a Considerate Constructors ‘Performance Beyond Compliance’ commendation for its ‘positive and proactive’ site management, and successfully completed more than 120,000 reportable accident-free hours on the project.
Facilities in the
new treatment centre include four operating theatres with recovery bays,
central sterilisation unit, minor operations room, endoscopy suite, diagnostics
and x-ray, 33 inpatient beds, procedure and consulting rooms, waiting area,
reception, café, pharmacy, physiotherapy and administration centre.
The Emersons Green
contract follows Yorkon’s successful completion in 2005 of its first project
for UKSH – the Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre. That scheme was manufactured and fitted out
in just 10 months and is now regarded as one of the
