Robust platform building manufactured off-site and installed in just two hours to minimise disruption and track possession costs
As part of the £165m regeneration of Leeds City Station, Railtrack required new platform buildings for Whitehall Triangle, to be used initially for Transpennine Express services calling at Leeds between midnight and 5am. The facilities would also serve some local passenger trains, mainly during off-peak times.
“Having looked closely at other applications of the Yorkon steel-framed modular building solution, such as fast-food restaurants and hotels, it was clear to us that this hi-tech approach to construction could offer Railtrack a number of significant advantages.”
Jim Busby, Senior Project Manager – Station Regeneration, Railtrack
The Portakabin Group provided a building constructed using the Yorkon building solution.
Two modules were manufactured off-site at the Portakabin Group production centre in York, then craned into position at Leeds station in just two hours over a weekend. This minimised disruption to passenger and freight services and reduced build costs by up to a third.
Jim Busby, Senior Project Manager for Station Regeneration at Railtrack, says: “Because the buildings are manufactured off-site, quality is guaranteed and track possession time is minimised. This has major customer service benefits and can dramatically reduce our construction costs.”
The new building houses a passenger waiting room, public toilets and office accommodation. Externally, it was completed in Railtrack’s green, grey and bronze corporate colours. Internally, the facilities have impact-resistant walls and hardwearing anti-vandal finishes.
